Everyone wants a fast running computer whether it be Mac or PC. As I’m a Mac user I’m going to share some tips on how to get your Mac/Macbook running as fast as possible so you can enjoy the experience to the full.
Listed below are some of the top ways to improve performance and speed of your Mac machine, whether is a laptop or desktop.
Reduce start-up apps
Your Mac/Macbook allows you to select programs that you want to start automatically when you boot up. Whist this seems like a good idea in theory, its an easy way to slow your machine down as its already trying to start key processes at that time. I suggest removing all programs that automatically launching at startup from the list.
You can do this in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items (tab at top). Empty your list and enjoy a much faster boot-up!
You can also do it by right-clicking the app in your dock > options > untick ‘open at login’.
Remove unused apps
If you have old apps that never get used it might be an idea to get these cleared off your machine as they are no-doubt taking up valuable space on your hard drive and could also be using memory. Get rid of them to help speed up your machine.
Clean up your hard drive
Although it might not make a large difference its always a good idea to keep your hard-drive as clean as possible. Have a quick check through and see if there are any large files that you no longer need. Maybe old photo albums or movies that you have already watched can be deleted. Every little helps.
Re-boot your machine
Sometimes processes can hang and apps can begin using valuable memory if they have been left running for considerable amounts of time. A good way of speeding up your Macbook/Mac is to simply reboot. All the unneeded processes that are running will be stopped and you can start again on a clean slate. Remember to save any work before you do this!
Clear your desktop
Believe it or not, having items on your desktop can slow down your machine because your Mac/Macbook uses resource in order to have them there. I always make sure my desktop is EMPTY of icons and shortcuts. All files you have on your machine can be housed neatly somewhere else or deleted. This might not have huge effects but its worth optimising everything in order to get better performance.
Re-install OS – Extreme!
It sounds extreme but re-installing the OS on your machine can give your Mac/Macbook a new lease of life. Just remember that everything you want to keep will have to be stored somewhere like on an external hard-drive or in cloud storage so you can get it back after the install. You will also need to make a note of all the apps that you use as you will have to download them again after the install is done.
Buy a new Mac/Macbook – Pricey!
Sometimes your machine can become a lost cause and age comes into effect…After 8 years of running a Macbook Pro I decided to start again and invest in a brand new one. The change in speed was incredible. I forgot how responsive these machines are when they are new, what a dream!
Thats all for now folks. I hope you enjoyed reading this and find the tips above useful. If you have any tips of your own please leave a comment below and I will add them to the post.
